Installing BoxTop on a Windows XP Pro Workstation

Before you start to install BoxTop on a new or reformatted workstation you must ensure that the relevant machine can log onto the network, has access to the correct folders and can install all printers needed to run BoxTop. Please complete the folowing procedure in the orderit has been written to ensure BoxTop runs correctly.

  1. You will need to check which drive letter you are using on your network for BoxTop. To check this you must be at a workstation which is currently running a working version of BoxTop. Double click on My Computer and you should see the local and mapped drives, e.g. BoxTop on server (H:), where server is the name of your server and H: is the drive letter used in the mapping.
  2. Make a note of this information before returning to the workstation which requires the drive to be mapped.
  3. Double click on My Computer, if you see the correct drive is already in the list try to double click on the drive. You may find that the following message will appear: Unable to connect to H:\BoxTop\ usually this means that you have not been able to log onto the network correctly or your network is down, restart your computer and try to logon to BoxTop again.
  4. If you still have the original error message try double clicking on My Computer then select Tools, Map Network Drive. In the Map Network Drive window please select the drive letter from the Drive: drop down list (e.g. H:) then in the Folder: field type in manually the full path in the following format: \\servername\BoxTop, and make sure there is a tick in the "Reconnect at Logon" box and then click Finish.
  5. Double click on My Computer, select the folders option at the top of the screen and you should see the correct drive is now in the list. Double click on the H:\BoxTop\ folder and again on the BoxTop folder and look for either an Install or Workstation folder, whichever way you choose you need to find the BoxTopMDEInstall.exe file. Double click on the name or icon to start the install process. Follow the instructions on screen. If you encounter any problems please call the support desk on 020 8400 2000

  6. You must now join the correct workgroup. Click Start, All Programs, BoxTop and then Workgroup.

  7. In the Workgroup Administrator window select Join and then in the Workgroup Information File window please select Browse

  8. From Drives: select C: and the from the Folders: window above double click on the BoxTop folder. To the left of this window you should see the file name BoxTopWG.MDW appear, click on this file name and BoxTopWG.MDW should appear in the File name: window above. Then select OK and OK in the following window and you should see the message

    Click OK and Exit
  9. Copy the BoxTopUpgrade.ini file from a similar working machine (Windows XP, 2000, 98) and paste to the H:\BoxTop\ directory on the server. Then copy and paste this file to the machine you're installing BoxTop on, it should be copied to the C:\Windows\System32\ directory, overwriting any existing file.
  10. Click Start, All Programs, BoxTop and select Upgrade

  11. Select the appropriate company from the list and then click on Upgrade. You may leave the default ticks in the Files to upgrade: boxes unless advised otherwise.
  12. The following message should appear

    Click on Yes and you should see the original message change colour and inform you that "A new version of BoxTop is currently being copied to your PC. This may take a couple of minutes." Once this is finished the message should change to

  13. Once completed you should be able to start BoxTop by clicking on the BoxTop icon on your desktop.
